A Gift Most Appropriate

A Gift Most Appropriate

Do not give me flowers.

Give me beautifully bound books,

Give me pages that will never wilt,

Give me lives that will never die.

Do not give me chocolates.

Give me the taste of a foreign sea,

Give me the fragrant air of a field beyond my reach,

Give me joys and heartbreak and wonder.

Do not give me a card.

Give me sweet poetry,

Give me the immortal lines of a love most cherished,

Give me a sonnet which only begins to describe your heart.

Do not give me flowers.

Do not give me chocolates.

Do not give me a card.

Give me your heart bound in leather, stitched with thread, and pulsing with ink.
